100 Years Later: Why Does Martha Graham Still Move Through Bodies?

[ Talk In 🇬🇧 with interpretation in 🇫🇷 and 🇪🇸 ]

With Rafael Molina, Graham For Europe’s Artistic Director
This inaugural talk asks why Martha Graham continues to move through bodies a century after the founding of her company. Drawing on history, personal experience, and situated perspectives, Rafael Molina questions the notion of a singular and timeless “Graham legacy” and proposes instead a plurality of legacies, each rooted in distinct realities and lived experiences.

Carrying Graham:
Gender and Transmission in a Moving Legacy

[ Talk In 🇬🇧 with interpretation in 🇫🇷 and 🇪🇸 ]

A conversation on gender within the legacy of Martha Graham, moderated by G4EU Artistic Director Rafael Molina

With Christine Dakin, a leading exponent of the Graham repertory who continues to perform, we reflect on what it means to embody this work as a woman. Drawing on roles Martha Graham created for herself, Dakin offers her perspective: how does Martha’s work sit within, alongside, or beyond feminism?

Lorenzo Pagano, Director of Resources at the Martha Graham Center, performs Immediate Tragedy (1937), created in response to the Spanish Civil War. Once danced by Graham, the work (long considered lost) has been reimagined from archival traces. Now performed by a man, it reopens a wider question across the repertory: who carries these roles, and how do they transform across bodies and time?

Jesse Factor presents The Marthaodyssey, a queer reimagining of Graham’s world. Blending modernist rigor with pop excess, and drawing inspiration from both Graham and Madonna, the piece unfolds as part archive, part spectacle, part drag, where lineage becomes a space of play: what happens when bodies outside its original gender framework take on this work?
