Celebrating the Graham Centennial: Graham Meets Tango in Brussels
As part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the Martha Graham Dance Company, an exciting new production will be presented in Brussels this spring. Gricel – A Tango Story, created by award-winning choreographer Astria Apel, brings together artists from Argentina, Europe, and New York in a fusion of Tango Argentino and Graham technique.
The production will incorporate the expressive power of Martha Graham’s technique with the passion and musicality of Argentine tango. Inspired by the true story of the love between Argentine tango poet José María Contursi and Gricel, the work covers themes of love, longing, and memory.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Martha Graham Dance Company of New York, one of the principal roles will be performed by Christine Dakin, legendary former Principal Dancer and Artistic Director of the Martha Graham Dance Company.

The exclusive preview will take place on April 8, 2026 at Espace Lumen, with doors opening at 6:00 PM for a tango social (“milonga”) before the performance at 8:00 PM.
