THE CLASS WILL BE LED BY VIRGINIE MÉCÈNE, PEDAGOGY INSTRUCTOR AT THE MARTHA GRAHAM CENTER, FORMER PRINCIPAL DANCER WITH THE MARTHA GRAHAM COMPANY AND FORMER DIRECTOR OF THE MARTHA GRAHAM SCHOOL. 

For whom?

This workshop is open to Graham-trained teachers or other teachers who would like to include some basic Graham in their classes. 

When?

The 3-Hour Teacher Workshop will be on March 23 from 15.00 to 18.00 pm.

Who is Virginie Mécène?

Virginie Mécène, former Principal Dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company, is the Artistic Director of Graham 2. She has served as the Director of the Martha Graham School from 2007 to 2015 developing the School curriculum while sustaining the integrity of the Martha Graham technique and nurturing the process that continues its development. She is currently the Program Director for the Two-Year Certificate Program and for the Teacher Training Program at the Martha Graham School. 

Virginie Mécène has taught master classes, workshops, and held conferences nationally and internationally.Through her teaching/coaching and her directorship of the Graham 2 company she has trained many dancers of the Martha Graham Dance Company. She has headed the full-year pedagogy program at the Martha Graham School for more than a decade and has trained numerous teachers who currently teach all over the world. She also created a week long Intensive Teacher Workshop for teachers who already teach the Graham Technique or wish to include some basic Graham in their classes. http://marthagraham.edu/teacher-workshop/  

As a choreographer she has presented her work in the U.S., Asia, and Europe. In 2017 she choreographed the solo Ekstasis, for the Martha Graham Dance Company, inspired by pictures of Martha Graham’s lost solo from 1933. Ekstasis “reimagined” received rave reviews and has since toured internationally. It will be performed at the Paris Opéra, at Palais Garnier, in September 2018. 

As a regisseur, Virginie Mécène has restaged Miss Graham’s works nationally and internationally in Universities and companies.   

A native of France, she graduated from the University of Bourgogne with a License Professionnelle in Artistic and Cultural management. She received multi-disciplinary dance training in Paris and graduated with a C.A.E. in Jazz from the Fédération Française de la Danse. After teaching in Paris she moved to New York City in 1988 for in-depth studies of the Martha Graham technique.
