ABOUT THE LEVELS
Minimum age 15 years old - No maximum age
Participants will have the opportunity to self-select their level on the registration form. This choice will be reviewed by the teachers based on their submitted video (for Inter-Advanced and Advanced Pro levels) and their first class, with the aim of ensuring optimal and safe learning.
THE LEVELS
BEGINNERS
Minimum age: 15
For students of all ages who enjoy dancing and have little or no experience in the Martha Graham Technique. It’s the perfect introduction to this work.
INTERMEDIATE
Minimum age: 15
For students with a background in academic dance techniques who are either new to the Martha Graham Technique or have limited experience with it. The class builds on Beginner-level material, moving at a faster pace and introducing more challenging combinations.
INTER-ADVANCED
Minimum age: 18
For students who have practiced the Graham Technique consistently for at least one year in an academic setting or a few years informally, and are familiar with its core principles and key movement sequences.
ADVANCED PRO
Minimum age: 20
For students who have mastered the Martha Graham Technique and deeply integrated its principles, whether they are graduates of programs where Graham was a primary technique or Graham teachers themselves.
GRAHAM TECHNIQUE
7 days (4 levels)
Graham technique is considered by many the "cornerstone" of U.S. modern dance. As the first codified modern technique, it has been taught worldwide, both as a tool to train expressive dancers, but also as a choreographic language giving birth to dance companies in several countries including: Batsheva, London Contemporary Dance Theater, Ballet Nacional de México...
CREATIVE WORKSHOP
5 days (4 levels)
Creativity sits at the heart of the Martha Graham work and its dissemination across pedagogic and performance contexts. The Creative Workshop will give carte blanche to the teacher as they work through the lens of Martha Graham’s philosophy and creative process, exploring how to embody and share themes with intention, honesty and power. This might include sections of the repertory but will most likely engage students with creating a new work.
IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP
2 days (for beginner and intermediate levels)
Through guided improvisations, participants will learn and develop Graham Fundamentals, such as breath, initiation, weight, opposition… This workshop encourages dancers to use the given tasks in generating movement material while supporting their individual artistic expression.
LEARNING LOST SEQUENCES
2 days (For Inter-advanced and Advanced)
Participants are invited to embody sequences from the Graham work that are rarely incorporated into current practice. Here you will have the chance to reflect and question whether this ‘lost’ vocabulary can and should be revived within the canon.
Colloquium & EVENTS
The intensive offers free events for all participants, including video screenings, an exhibit and a colloquium with practitioners and researchers engaged in the Martha Graham legacy. The week will culminate with a final participant showing and two performances by Graham artists: Lorenzo Pagano in the 1937 Graham solo "Immediate Tragedy", and Jesse Factor in "The Marthaodyssey", a fantasy combining elements of Martha Graham and Madonna with deep reverence and playful humor.
All participants who complete the program will receive a Certificate of Completion.
